100 years of the wedding cake

100 years of the wedding cake

Cakes have been part of weddings since time immemorial and have been a valuable part of wedding tradition as far back as weddings can be traced.
Some cakes have been designed for once in a lifetime quite literally, that we cannot stop mulling over them through generations. There are also a bunch of cakes emerging from the sheer genius of bakers where the beauty of the cake was in its simplicity.

In the first three decades of the 20th Century, making wedding cakes was a luxury. A couple typically made the cake at the bride’s home, designed it at the baker’s and then cut it for guests at the reception.

In the 40s and 50s couples became more deliberate about having their cakes made at the bakers. According to Daily Meal, it was also in the 1950s that cake toppers came of age as is visible in the photo above. In fact, in the 50s, wedding cakes started to become an architectural marvel, a trend that continued through the 60s and came of age in the 70s and 80s.

In the 2000s, cake designs became slightly more creative as couples opted more and more for cheaper options partly due to tough financial times but also in an attempt to reflect their preferences. You could very well argue that this new trend has given us some of the most artistic cakes in our time.

For cake-makers at the time, the new trend eased work and saved costs. They did not have to get into elaborate designs and spend enormous amounts of time on design accessories like toppers and icing.

In the last decade, however, cakes have taken on a new dimension. Apart from more and more elaborate designs, colour has also become a significant addition to cake design. The colours are as varied as they are blended together.

Cake makers and designers urge couples to be proactive in making their desires known. They note that the earlier the designs and flavours are agreed upon, the easier it is to have the perfect cake that the couple desires.

When a cake has various elements of design, it takes a very skilled cake designer to pull off such a great fit and yet the trend today is to adopt more and more complex designs.
There you have it, the trends in cake designs over the last one hundred years arraigned in pictures.
